To be competitive in the field, you must have a graduate degree (masters). To do counseling, you must be licensed by the state (LCSW-licensed clinical social worker). Entry level positions with government agencies my require only a bachelor degree, depending on the state requirements. Determine what area of social work is of interest, then you can put together a plan.

There are different levels of licensure and qualifications for a social worker. All require at least a bachelor's degree in social work, as well as passing a licensing examination and completing a sort of apprenticeship. Many social workers have graduate degrees, and this is a higher form of license for this profession.

You will need a degree in social work and will need to have taken some psychology courses. From there, you will need to find an agency that is hiring and apply for the open position. Remember that this is a field that has few jobs and many applicants, so you might have to intern or take a lesser position.

There are college classes to take to get certified in this field. Because of the pressure of this field many have left the field. If you are a strong willed person this might be the job for you. You also need to be a people person.
