The main concern for women over 45 and on birth control is the increased risk of blood clots. Birth control pills and other hormone based birth control can cause an increase in blood clots and the effects of aging also take a toll on the blood vessels leading to a potentially dangerous situation.

There are some risks for women who are over 45 who take birth control. It can increase your chances for getting certain types of cancer. Women who are over 45 and have high blood pressure, and who smoke or have blood clots should probably not use birth control. The chances of complications with these conditions is greater.

Older women are at greater risk for cardiovascular problems; this is especially so for women who smoke. Also, the extra estrogen may increase the risk of breast cancer, as some forms are estrogen receptive.

It is not a good idea to be on birth control at such an advanced age. There is an increased risk of heart attack, stroke or sudden death. Most doctors typically recommend older women to use anothe form such as condoms or IUD. You may also want to explore a natural form of control.

If you are using the birth control pill or another hormonal contraceptive, the risk of life threatening blood clots goes up. This risk if far higher if you smoke or use tobacco. If you are on birth control and begin menopause, the effects of menopause may be lessened but not mitigated.
