"Niece" comes from the Middle English "nece," which has origins in "neptis," which is Latin for "granddaughter." "Nepos" is the masculine version - "nephew."

Both niece and nephew has Indo-European etymologies. Niece comes from the Indo-European word "nepti" and nephew comes from the word "nepot".
