Self defense law would vary from state to state and you would be best checking with your local authority. Each state decides what can be considered self defense, some call it involuntary manslaughter and some will call it self defense. Go online and check for your local government stance on it.

This criminal defense depends upon the state. Some states require you to "retreat to the wall" before defending yourself, meaning you have avoided the confrontation until you were cornered or trapped. The other grounds for self defense are: victim is not an aggressor, the victim was threatened or harmed previously, or the victim faced imminent danger of serious bodily harm.

In tort law, self defense is a valid defense for charges of assault, battery, and possibly other torts, such as trespass to land or trespass to chattel.

Self-defense is defined legally as the the right to use "reasonable force" to protect oneself or family members from bodily harm, or to protect one's property, from attack/an aggressor if the individual feels there is a threat/danger. There are many reasons why an individual could feel the need to defend himself/herself. It's not always black and white.
