Obviously, it depends on the brand. Lipstick generally contains wax, colourings, oil, alcohol as well as other more dubious chemicals like: tocopheryl acetate (listed as moderately hazardous), methylparaben (a preservative), propylparaben (again, moderately hazardous), as well as pigments, which can sometimes be, in and of themselves, hazardous. If you're really curious, check your lipsticks before you buy them.

Usually lipstick contains Beeswax, Candelilla wax, Carmine, FD & C colorings, Iron Oxides, Lanolin, Petrolatum, Alcohol and fragrance. Sometimes it contains artificial dyes which they refer to as "lake colors".
