Smoking itself costs from $25-50 a week. In the future, if he gets COPD or another medical condition, expect to pay at least 2k a year, more for lung cancer.

Smoking has been estimated by the Centre for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to put a burden on the US economy of around $96 billion in health care costs. It costs the taxpayer even more than that when lost productivity is taken into account.

The costs can vary greatly depending on how the smoker is effected. For example one could die long before smoking kills them or from something entirely different,in which case the cost would be zero. A person could also get lung cancer or emphysema which could be rather costly. In any case quitting is probably a good idea.

The healthcare cost of smoking run into billions of dollars but are cannot be estimated in a single individual. Smoking predisposes an individual to lung cancer, heart disease , strokes and impotence. A lot of men quit smoking when they find out that it can make them impotent.
