The only way to pitch a softball is obviously underhanded (not overhand). There are different spins and rotations that you can put on the ball which it makes it difficult for the batter to hit, but remember, it must be thrown for a strike or it doesn't matter, so practise is the best way.

Slow pitch softball requires a high arc, some spin on the ball upon release, crossing the plate between the ankles and the chest, and not landing in front of the plate. Fast pitch softball requires a set pre-pitch stance, your feet on the pitching rubber, a windmill motion, and a strong, quick follow-through.

There are four basic pitches: the drop ball, rise, curve and screwball. Each of these pitches are taught to beginner pitchers. For single game purposes, and I would assume you are playing slow pitch softball, placement will be the most important thing to worry about. Keep your underhanded pitches sloghtly above the batters knees to cause batters to hit grounders.

There is only 2 typical ways to pitch a softball, underhand slow pitch (with a 15 foot arc) or underhand fast pitch.

There are several ways to pitch a soft ball, but the most commonly used in women's soft ball leagues is the standard underhand throw. You can also throw the soft ball overhand, but it is not recommended or considered legal in women's soft ball leagues, so you should just throw underhand.
