There are several different types of computers. You can build your own for one thing. Actual big name brands are HP, Dell, Lenovo, Toshiba, Apple. For people who generally just want a computer thats ready to go out of the box, I usually recommend Dells. They have good prices and work well.
You have three options-desktops, laptops, and netbooks.

Computers come in different types, sizes and case colors, depending on what they are designed to be used to. The main categories of computers are: personal computers, laptops and servers. Personal computers are mainly the desktop computers such as Apple Computer. The laptops are made from two categories: laptops (very mobile) and notebooks.
Well there is Compaq, Dell, Toshiba , Hp , Acer, Power spec and more. You are going to want a dual core processor with at-least 4 gigs of ram and 250gb Hard Drive, anything else is or will be outdated shortly. I purchased a Compaq Desktop and a Acer laptop last year and both are running strong.
There are a large slew of options that range from Custom building which can if done right get you a much better computer for less or toshiba, dell, hewlett Packard, gateway ect.
Options: Apple is better for creatives, Windows for business. Laptops are portable but more expensive. Size varies from 10 inches to 17 inches (desktops have separate monitors). Cost varies from $300 to $3000. Specs will determine ideal usage: gaming, video, web browsing, or general use.
Dell offers a very wide variety of computers, but Toshiba offers amazing customer service and are very reliable. Mac products are very versatile and safe, but expensive.
The two main competitors are PCs and Macs. In my opinion Macs are more for like the arts and editing purposes. PCs seem to be more of a general usage. it all depends on your reason for looking for one.
