Stock sectors are the differnt categorize that are traded. Examples are financial, transportation, energy, retail, health care, materials, and technology.

Any investment in sectors will define the sector by describing it in the prospectus and listing the current holdings. There is no industry-wide definition of stock sector. If you want to educate yourself in general terms, the websites for large invesment firms are good resources.

Stock sectors refer to the primary business of a company. It divides companies into "industries" so that you don't over-invest in any one area of the economy. Sectors help investors diversify.
