The Roman Catholic Church is the largest Christian church dating back to Saint Peter, governed by the Pope, beliefs are summarized by the Nicene Creed. The Easter Orthodox church does not recognize papal authority, and became independent of the Catholic Church in the Great Schism. The Protestants appeared in the 16th century after the Reformation generally started by Martin Luther.

Protestants place importance on following Scripture alone, as well as a personal relationship with Christ. Eastern Orthodoxy and Catholicism rely more on Church tradition as an additional source of authority.

According to the Catholics, the Holy Spirit emanates both from the Father and from the Son. The Orthodox, however, believe that it comes only from the Father.

The primary differences between Protestant, Eastern Orthodoxy, and Catholicism are their administration organizations and their beliefs or theology. Catholicism has the Pope in Rome as it leader. Eastern Orthodoxy recognizes Patriarchs. Protestant churches have a variety of leaders as head of their churches. The theological differences usually include sacraments, the role of Mary, and role of saints.
