They are very similar. The biggest difference is that the Episcopal church does not accept the authority of the Pope. Another difference is that Episcopals allow anyone to take communion.

In Catholicism, it is believed that one must confess his or her sins. Episcopals do not need to go to confession as this is not part of their religion. Also, the Catholic religion doesn't support the use of birth control.

There are an enormous number of differences! The Episcopal denomination is rooted in the Anglican church, which as you may well know, split with the Catholic church centuries ago. In that way, most ways that Anglicanism is different from Catholicism will apply to the Episcopal church as well. The Pope is not recognized, of course, among very many other differences.

When the English colonized much of the world, including here, they took along the Church of England. The Episcopal Church is the American offspring of the Church of England. Governance is democratic; religious authority is in Scripture, Tradition and Reason (with respect for personal conscience); 2 sacraments and 5 sacramental rites; women may be priests; priests need not be celibate.

Catholicism has the Pope in Rome as its head, Episcopalians have their head as the Archbishop of Canterbury. Catholicism requires confession to receive sacrament, for Episcopalians it is preferred but not required.
