A CAT-5 straight (or patch) cable and a CAT-5 crossover cable are the same except the second and third pairs of wires are switched on one end of crossover cables.

Well a straight cable is a cable in which the 5 terminal each connect to the exact same terminal on both sides of the connections. They mainly for straight data transfer in a network. Crossover or "patch" cable look similar but are internally different. These have certain wire crossed to allow communication between the to connected pieces of hardware.
