What are the copyright rules about transferring VHS to DVD?

I own the videotape. Can I legally transfer it for myself?

You own the VHS and have the right to use it. You can transfer it to DVD for your private use. Copyright law prevents you from making 500 copies on DVD and profiting from the sales. But as is the case with a CD-to-iPod copy, you can copy the VHS.

If you own the video, you can transfer it to DVD for your personal use. You can loan the DVD to a friend. You cannot make multiple copies and sell them. Copyright law prohibits you from benefiting monetarily from the protected work.

If it is for personal use, there should not be a problem. Under the fair use doctrine, you are allowed to make one copy.

There is an exception for home use that would allow this. However, there are a lot of machines that will still block recording of copywritten tapes.
