This special type of abscess occurs primarily in young men between the ages of 15-24. It seldom occurs after the age of 40. It is thought to occur as a result of loose hairs penetrating the skin in combination with long periods of sitting, such as in long trips or traveling distances on bumpy terrain. Surgery will eliminate the cyst.

Pilonidal cyst occures commonly in men between ages of 15 and 24. Horse riding, cycling, sitting for long hours, wearing tight clothes around buttocks and excessive swetting may stretch the hair follicles near the coccyx region. These get clogged with skin and hair debris and cause pilonidal cyst.

Pilondial cysts are most frequently caused by ingrown hairs, or loose hairs migrating under the skin. Men are more susceptible to this infection, but women are more likely to seek treatment. Other contributing factors are prolonged sitting and repeated trauma. While many think of pilonidal cysts as "big pimples" these have caused hospitalizations and should be treated ASAP.
