Question by  Kelli (181)

What are the best ways to teach a pet tricks?

I have a new dog, and I want to teach it everything without having to send it to an obedience school.

Communication and consistency. Find a reward and associate it in the dog's mind with a signal. That way the dog knows he is doing something good. Be consistent.

Teaching your dog tricks isn't hard, but requires frequent practice, patience, and motivation. Reward your dog when he/she does it right, whether it is a treat or a pat on the head.

The best way to train a new pet is with reinforcement training. Every time your dog does what you want, give it a treat. If you are trying to get the dog to "sit", say sit, gently push the dog to sit, then give the treat. Repeat lots of times.

The best way for a dog to learn is repetition. Also, reward him with treats, dog respond to food. But be patient, and keep at it, your dog will learn.

Always use food, preferably sliced frozen hot dogs in your mouth. To teach sit, have dog in front of you, tell sit, push slightly on rear end and as soon as dog sits, remove slice from mouth and give to dog. You always want the dogs attention on your face.
