Native species of columbine, phlox, goldenrod, nodding onion, wild geranium, dense blazing star, purple coneflower, spiderwort and Queen-of-the-prairie add color to the Hoosier garden. Additional natives - Joe-pye weed, tall coreopsis, butterfly weed, New England aster and ironweed - attract butterflies as well.

Wild bergomot is good for partial shade areas. Purple coneflower works well all over the state, and Queen of the Prairie gtows well in the grassland areas.

Cone flowers produces a purple or white flower. Harebell blooms from June until the first frost, and is deep blue in color. Blanketflower produces yellow-red flowers and prefers full sun. Black Eyed Susan is also a yellow flower and blooms from July through September. Any of these would be wonderful in a garden.

Look for plans that match your plant hardiness map. For Indiana, you will probably want plants hardy to zone 5 or less. Mums, roses, peonies, black eyed susans and other daisies and bulbs like tulips, crocus and daffodils are all good choices.
