All Running Backs should know 3 simple routes when they start. Run between the A Gap, which is between Center and Guard. Run between the B Gap, which is between Guard and Tackle. The final one is the sweep, which is outside of the tackles.

If you are talking about running backs, basic routes include sweep plays (outside the tackles) and trap plays (inside the guards).

You need to make a play that is good for the given situation. Such as a 3rd down i would suggest running an up the gut running play that brings one lineman to the side to block some more. I would suggest looking up more plays.
