Brass is not as reactive chemically with iron and other metals, unlike copper. Brass is often used as a segway between copper and iron or cast iron pipes to keep electrolysis at bay. Due to the price of brass verse copper and iron, long runs of piping are rarely ever used in plumbing.

Brass pipes are optimal in standard plumbing because brass is far less prone to rusting and general wear than other piping material. Also, water discoloration is less frequent using brass pipes as opposed to steel. This is particularly true among hot water applications (which will constitute the bulk of your plumbing).
