Nickel-Cadmium batteries have a number of advantages, including a more robust chemistry, being difficult to damage from total discharge, a slower self discharge rate of 20% per month sitting unused versus NiMH's 30% loss per month , and finally can be discharged faster, enabling use in higher-demand devices.

NiCD (Nickel-Cadmium) and NiMH (Nickel-Metal Hydride) are two popular formats of rechargable batteries but they have some signifigant differences. NiCD is much more tolerant of frequent charges/discharges and will dis-charge with a higher draw amperage. NiMH will lose charge even if your device is off, NiMH however is good at things that require a long draw at a low amperage.
