The symptoms of a bad cam sensor for a Ford Taurus include poor acceleration, "lumpy" idle meaning the car will jostle, kick and or sputter while idling. It will show all of the same symptoms as a bad catalytic converter but without the rotten eggs smell coming from the exhaust.

A bad cam sensor will cause poor acceleration, spark knocking, and god awful fuel economy. The car should still start but run poorly.

A bad cam sensor will cause the engine to misfire and run very poorly. The engine will be vibrating VERY badly if you are lucky enough to get it running.

If you cam position sensor is malfunctioning then you would notice driveability issues. Rough idle and acceleration combined with misfires would be most likely.

The main symptoms for this would be as if the vehicle was "starving" for fuel. Hard or slow starting, slow acceleration, hesitation or even stalling can also occur when depressing the accelerator pedal. If the vehicle is taken to a dealership they should be able to verify with quick diagnostic.
