Cognates are words in two or more languages that are descended from the same parent word, but are not normally descendent from each other. An example of cognates in German and English is mutter and mother, both of which are from a parent language but are not from each other.

Spanish cognates are words which exist or are convertible into another language. There are a lot of English-Spanish cognates which convey the same meaning and are sometimes spelled exactly the same way. Examples of English-Spanish cognates include the following words: hotel, radio, idea, and regular.
