Pick up an Italian phrase book, preferably one that comes with a CD so that you can hear the accent. You can decide what phrases will be useful for your purposes. The locals will be very pleased with any effort you make to communicate with them in their native language. Be polite and familiarize yourself with responses.

Going to Italy will be more fun if you know some basic phrases. First, to say "hello", Italians say "ciao." To say "goodbye", use either "ciao" or "arrivederci." To say, "How are you doing?", use "Come stai?" or "come va?" To ask what someone's name is, say "Come ti chiami?"
