When our son was 5 years old and talked back, we would first gently remind him of the rules in our home concerning respect and manners. If he persisted, we would more firmly advise him of the rules. If he continued, I would have him stand at the end of the hallway, alone, receiving no attention from us.

Explain that talking back is not acceptable. Have a detailed talk about what talking back is and why it cannot be tolerated. After the child has a solid understanding start putting him/her in time out when he/she talks back.

Don't argue with him/her. Explain ahead of time that for each time he/she talks back you will take a toy away. When it happens, without warnings take a toy. Keep them in a safe spot and return them only if he/she earns each one back with positive behavior.

Put your child in time out for this behavior. If your child doesn't respond to that take away some of your child's T. V. time.
