Ask if the doctor can work with you to reduce costs. Ask if the physicians assistance could do a procedure. Have them itemize the cost of consults and procedures prior to having them done. Ask if these are absolutely necessary. For prescriptions see if there is a generic substitute.

They may refer you to free clinics or county health clinics that take the uninsured. They may help you sign up for government health programs, especially CHIP or Medicaid.
