Cistus is a deciduous flowering shrub perfectly suited to dry conditions. The flowers are 6cm in diameter, bright pink and papery with a darker centre. A good neighbour for Cistus would be Fathead Lavender which provides spears of deep mauve fragrant little flowers topped with deep violet frilly petals.

Shubs that may be grown in the inland area of California include cactus and succulents. The extremely dry climate discourages plants that need great amounts of water. Plants that require heavy watering are not likely to thrive. Cactus have specialized stems that serve to hold water.

Drought tolerate shrubs such as hedges and azaleas works best in a dry area that does not get much rain. Some people have much success with the oriental poppy and the chrysanthas.

Jade plant, Cactus, Yucca, Oleander, palms all work for us. Tour your neighborhood, see what has worked in an older section. Visit local park and see what the professionals planted. The space and water available will help narrow the selection. Buy small, many and let them grow.
