Some of the best ghost stories are the classics, such as The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, The Golden Hand, and that famous classic by Edgar Allen Poe, the Tell Tale Heart. And of course, one of the best of all time, with multiple ghosts, is Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol.

The Pan collections of ghost stories are very popular, there are 30 volumes and they contain stories by different authors. It's a good way of finding out which writers are to your taste so you can pursue them further.

One of the greatest ghost stories in literature is "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow", also good to note are "The Monkey's Paw", "The Tell-Tale Heart". If you are looking or something more recent, try "Pet Cemetary". That one is pretty creepy.
