Upright yews requite special care to flourish. Water regularly, but be sure the yew has ample drainage. When planting, keep the plant out in the open and lightly cover root balls. Be sure to wrap your yew with burlap during its first winter, and it will thrive the following year.

The biggest problem for yews locally is their tendancy to be run over by lawn mowers and otherwise be killed by humans doing their normal activities around them. While they are settling in take extra care in marking them off so that the guy with the riding mower and children at play do not trample them before they can establish.
