Ad-ware just keeps putting ads on your desktop. Not too big of a threat. Spy-ware tries to gather information from your computer and send it back to the "bad people" Trojan Horse is a virus hidden in another program.

Virus's do different things among some of them are steel private information like credit card numbers, slowly delete your computer's memory (causing it to slow way down), and completely deleting all of the information stored on your computer (making it unusable. )

Probably the most widely seen one is called a worm. It basically spreads through networked computer much like worm through the ground. Another is a Trojan. This programs come in with another program and allows access to the computer.
