How about a "color party"? Pick one color, and have everyone dress head to toe in that color, serve foods only that color, etc. Or similar, you could have everyone pick their own color (again, dress head to toe) and set the potluck food (in their chosen color only!) in rainbow order.

You might choose a national/ethnic food theme and decorations matching that choice, or a time period with foods and decorations from that period. You could also use the pun in your question -- choose a novel and base the party on that story.

Drinking games are always the best party ideas. You can also hire someone pretty cheap to be a bartender for the night.
