If fixtures are white, try a strong color: I have a deep burgundy I love. Otherwise, coordinate with what is there or with art you will hang in the room.
A light cream or brown color would probably be nice. It looks fairly clean, lightens up the space, and does not look like it gets easily dirty like a white would.
