What are some ideas for a 40th birthday party?

Someone turning 40 this year will have been born in 1970, and the '70s make a great theme party. Send out groovy retro invites, ask people to come in costume, and suggest everyone bring a gift that reflects the era (popular toys, music, or decor from way back when).

Celebrate the 20th anniversary of the person's 20th birthday. Have two 20's on the cake. Put 20+20=40 on the invitations. 20 again! Another idea is to use the theme of "40 in the 1940's", with music, clothing, food etc. from the 1940's. Maybe have a mystery dinner with something that happened in the 1940's, or dance the jitterbug or waltz.

Have a White Trash Birthday Bash! Instead of fancy cocktails, have a cooler full of "40"oz beers. Encourage guests to show 40% more skin (think Dukes of Hazard's Daisy with the shirt tied above the waist and short shorts). Make assorted sandwiches, cut them in half, then cut a small piece off with a sign that says "40% off."

For a 40th birthday party I would focus on the persons favorite hobby and use this for the theme. Have the decorations focus around this.

Just celebrate! Don't make the age a big issue of the party. If you do want to make it about turning 40, just do something simple like "turning 40, and still going!" Do a barbecue, luau, or theme such as "sports" or "jazz" according to what the birthday person likes.
