What are some great first communion gifts?

I do not want to give the typical gift, something unique.

A keepsake baby record book would be really nice. You could make your own for it to be really unique.

The two first communion gifts I received that I'll never forget were water from the well at Lourdes, France and a picture from an outing at a local shrine. My aunt paid a friend to get the holy water from Lourdes while she was on vacation, and my Grandmother drove me to a shrine where we spent the day together.

St. Augustine said sacraments are "outward and visible signs of inward and spiritual gifts" so maybe a treasure box of some type would be a great choice. You can explain what St. Augustine said, and suggest keeping treasures in the box that are signs of God's love.
