For a small home Poodles are hypoallergenic, loving, intelligent. Top choice worldwide are Labs, and Golden Labs- devoted, trainable, patient and gentle, they love and protect children. Shepherds are another good choice. An SPCA or AHS mutt is ALWAYS the BEST choice,they have been vetted and evaluated for temperament.

It really depends on the kids and their ages. Generally speaking, a sturdy medium sized dog with a good temperament is the best fit. Beagles are typically very tolerant with kids, but you have to make sure you're okay with the barking/howling before adopting.

Believe it or not, I would recomend getting your children a pit bull puppy. Pit Bulls are fiercely loyal and protective dogs. They also have a high pain tolerance in case you children accidently hurts the dog.

Labrador Retrivers, either the American or English breed, are excellent puppies for children. They are extremely playful and gentle with children.
