Here is a good rule of thumb. Try and have guests stay clear of religion and most definitely politics. Perhaps they can discuss light entertaniment like their favorite reality shows and what movies was their favorite. Also with emphasis on everyone going green maybe they can offer suggestions on how to make the earth safer for all.

Discussing the latest Hollywood gossip or movie release would be safe topics for your dinner party. Religion or politics should be avoided, these topics could cause heated arguments.

This depends on the people-I find books and movies to be good topics-something like politics can get messy and ugly pretty fast. Current events/sports can be good. People tend to steer conversations in weird ways, so even if you start a topic, don't be surprised if it goes somewhere else entirely.

you could talk about your job, sometimes people are looking for different job you also talk about how much your kids are growing.
