Chi's are a really great breed, and a purebred is an awesome dog, however, any other mix with another small dog like a poodle, dachshund or Shih Tzu is an excellent choice combining the best of the breeds. Avoid "designer dogs" that breed a chi with a much larger dog.

I have heard that chihuahua/terrier mixes are very friendly and easy to train. They may be a little protective, but will be very playful and sweet. Whatever mix you get it could be susceptible to the common problems in both breeds that it is mixed with. Getting a plain chihuahua may mean less problems.
