Volkswagen makes a couple of really good cheap diesel cars including Rabbit, Jetta and the Beetle. The Beetle and the Rabbit are both good choices for their economy and reliability.

Well probably the most affordable smaller car is some type of diesel Volkswagen, like a Jetta or Golf. There are also a lot of diesel Mercedes available here in the US but there are slightly bigger typically. For a new one, VW and Audi both make smaller diesel cars.

Non-truck diesel cars are limited in the American market. Perhas the most widely available quality cars are inevitably Mercedes Benz models. A great advantage is that you will be able to find shops to service this type of vehicle here.
