Give them activities to do while reading. Divide them into groups and give them some time to read the chapter you want them to read that day. Have them plan a reenactment each week of their favorite part in the chapter. They can pick their characters and get involved with the story. Encourage them to give their own interpretations!

I think assigning groups of teenagers to act out portions of literature with different themes could be interesting and fun - easiest example would be like acting out Romeo and Juliet in a country western style, like toddlers, or some other fun motif could make them remember and enjoy.

Find loads of books & magazines on subjects you know your students are interested in. Make up a quiz involving reading the clues, with teenage friendly prizes.

Let the students create a trivia quiz. Each student should find 5 or more questions to a given very specific topic. This will involve quite a bit of research and hence reading (even if it's on the internet) about a subject, you decide. These topics should made public, so that they can prepare for the quiz, which involves again reading).
