Many couples today decide to live together without getting married, reasoning that they will have more independence, financial security, and other reasons. However, there are no real financial reasons not to marry. By getting married, you are assured that if your spouse dies, you will receive benefits.

Marriage should never be about money, whether it is getting married or not getting married. You should get married because you love the person and want to spend the rest of your life with them. Though if you want money, if you have kids you will get more back in taxes being a single parent than a married one.

If your potential spouse is irresponsible with money, that would be a good reason not to remarry. If your potential spouse has a lot of debt that you would wind up paying off, that would be another good reason not to remarry.
