Imagine that someone has a bad temper. Instead of yelling back and escalating the cycle, simply state each time, "This isn't like you, you're so loving and funny, you're not like this." They may manage their temper better because they see it as aberrant, not their true personality.

When a person who is addicted to nicotine is trying to stop smoking, he may need to abstain from drinking coffee if that is associated with smoking. Similarly, if a person who abuses alcohol is trying to quit drinking, he may use the 12 Steps of AA to modify behavior.
