You need to make sure you take along plenty of snacks and travel games or books for entertainment. Take a map so you can chart your progress. make sure the hotel is child-friendly.

Make sure you have all the child's paperwork and identification in 1 place where you can easily access it. Also bring plenty of toys and refills of any prescriptions you may need.

It really depends on the age of the child but for all children you need to have proper snacks for them to eat while on the road. You also have to have something for them to drink and make plenty of pit stops so they can to use the bathroom.

If it is only a grandparent with a grand child, be sure you have a medical proxy by the parent that allows you to take the child to a doctor if necessary.

Make sure that you have a consent form from the parents giving permission to seek medical care for the child, copies of birth certificate and insurance records. Make sure you have plenty to entertain them while on the trip
