If the guy is into sports, ask him to explain the rules of the game to you, especially if you are unfamiliar with them. That way he gets to talk about his interests and involve you. You could follow up with asking him to go to a game with you.

When conversation flags you can always turn to the tried and tested game of sports. Most men support some kind of sports team. If that doesn't work, ask about hobbies.
