Originally the word comes from the book "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" and they have different appearances in different editions of the book, in film versions and in cartoons. They are just a different type of little person, and yes some versions are creepy, but some are cute.

They are fictional characters in Ronald Dahl novels, notably Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. They are knee high and have fanciful haircuts. They like to sing and play jokes. Orignally, they were African pygmies, but due to controversy this was later changed to white skin and light hair.

The Oompa Loompas are characters out of the book Charlie and the chocolate factory written by Roald Dahl. The book was written in 1964. The Oompa Loompas are small people who work for Willy Wonka in his chocolate factory. Two film adaptations have been made and the Oompa Loompas don't look creepy in either.
