Plastic containers are the cheap option, and can be very colorful and fun. Stone containers look great, but are quite expensive. Try metal planters for a modern, sleek aspect.
Almost anything can be used to hold plants as long as you have a power drill or something for making holes. I've seen people using tin cans and take-out containers.
