You have to have no criminal background (in fact overall, a pretty clean one even without a criminal background), have to be physically fit, make good decisions under pressure, like working with people, and not be afraid of certain situations or working in bad environments (including weather). Most of all, you have to like helping people.

If you have a good academic record, are in excellent physical condition, and have no blemishes in your civil record (and no criminal record), you have a decent chance of becoming a police officer. In most states, you need at least 60 hours of college credit before you can apply to the Police Academy.

The chances are good as long as you are in good physical and mental shape. You will have to have a high school diploma first and a college degree is usually beneficial. You will then have to make it through the police academy which generally has a pass rate of about 40-50% depending on your area.
