Laws about abandoned animals vary greatly depending on where you live. In some places it is a crime to abandon an animal, in other places there is no law at all about it.

Depending on your city and state, fines can be imposed followed by jail time. Also if the animal was abused, neglected, or mishandled, the fines can be higher and imprisonment could occur. The laws very from state to state, however, the same genral concept is practiced. Do right to your animals and you won't have to worry about it.

Laws about abandoned animals determine the ultimate disposition of abandoned and stray animals, mainly dogs and cats. These laws regulate how long an animal is retained by the County or City before it is euthanized. A copy of these laws can be obtained at the County Courthouse or City Hall in the City Clerk's Office.

Well basically when animals are abandoned, the owner may be charged a penalty if found. Also, any abandoned animal is the property of the state and will go to a lost- dog pound.

Laws very from state to state you need to call animal control and have them come out and talk to you about it. They are the ony ones that properly let you know what the specific laws are about it in your area and that can be very touchy if you cross the wrong lines.
