Three things, besides water, I like to carry is nuts like walnuts or almonds. Fresh fruit, apples are the best and high fiber granola bars. Sometimes I also make peanut butter and jelly sandwich on a whole grain bread. So good when you are tired and hungry.
The thing i like the most on a tough hike is fresh fruit. Its a little heavy (because of the water content), but you need that anyway. Fresh apples, bananas, oranges, pears are fantastic when you are tired.

I once had an extra fuji apple at the summit of Mt. Whitney in the California Sierras. I gave it to a guy from New Zealand and he was so unbelievably appreciative. add a comment
You will want foods that are light, easy to carry, and provide a lot of energy for a hike. Good choices include foods like beef jerky, nuts, and trail mix. Granola is another good option.
Hiking is a workout as well as a pleasure so, be sure to carry loose trail mix, nuts, fresh fruits and vegetables in bite size pieces, and vitamin fortified water.
