Flying ants are sometimes mistaken for termites. Flying ants have three body parts, whereas termites have a head and a body only. The ant's antennae has a bend in it and the termite's does not. Each has two sets of wings; the ant's front wings are longer than back ones.

Once a year the queen ants fly out, along with some smaller males, to establish new colonies, at which point they shed their wings.
