These are coins that are found in shipwrecks and are usually very hard to discern since they have been under water for large amounts of time.

They are very old Spanish coins. What is interesting about them is they are almost never round...they come in pretty much any shape. They look like broken pieces but were respected coins at the time. The Spanish called them "caba de barra" - cut from the "end of the bar".

The Spanish produced cob coins after Columbus discovered the New World when they began to mine precious metals from places such as Peru. A cob coin was produced by placing a roughly round slug of precious metal between an anvil die and pounding it with another die using a mallet, thus, yielding rough imprints of the design on each side.

Cob coins are a type of simple currency which was minted in Mexico. They were first created in the 16th century and then minted for two-hundred years after that. These silver and gold coins were both struck by hand and hand-trimmed.
