What are black worms that have yellow rings?

I have found several black worms in my back yard and have no idea what they are.

This black worm with yellow rings is actually a caterpillar that occurs in most southern states and throughout the eastern part of the United States so chances are that bright 'worm' you saw was a Catawba or Catalpa Worm. The Catawba or Catalpa Worm is actually the caterpillar of the Catalpa Sphinx moth.

These are probably not worms, perhaps baby snakes. They could be caterpillars, but would have feet, of course. Sometimes worms, which can be dark, have lighter rings due to trauma.
