Connecting rods are the physical link between the piston and the crankshaft inside the engine. As the engine runs the rod move up and down. When the engine experiences problems such as a seized piston or bearing the rod can't move as it normally would causing it to bend sideways.

The term bent rod refers to push rods being bent from overheating or over revving an engine. If you have a car with an overhead cam engine it is impossible to have a bent push rod. Push rods are the mechanical link that exists between the camshaft and the rocker arm.

"Rod" is generally shorthand for "connecting rod". There are several in each car's engine, one for each cylinder. A bent rod usually refers to the connecting rods. When someones abuses an engine and makes a piston seize, bending the rod as the crankshaft trys to make it move.
